A comprehensive evaluation is the first step in understanding your child’s needs and developing an effective treatment plan.
Evaluations typically include:
One session with the child or adolescent (60 minutes)
One session with parent(s) or guardian(s) (60 minutes)
A feedback session to review diagnostic impressions and recommendations (30 minutes)
The evaluation includes a detailed review of developmental, medical, educational, and family history. When appropriate, this process may also involve:
Collaboration with schools or outside providers
Review of prior testing or records
Recommendations for additional psychological, educational, or medical evaluation
Following the evaluation, treatment recommendations may include psychotherapy, medication, or a combination of both, depending on your child’s needs.
-
Routine follow-up visits are typically used for:
Medication management
Monitoring progress in stable situations
Coordination with outside therapists.
-
Longer follow-up visits are used when:
More complex concerns are present
Ongoing psychotherapy is provided in addition to medication management
Additional time is needed to work with both the child and family
These sessions allow for deeper discussion, skill-building, and more integrated care.
FAQs
Parents and caregivers play a central role in child and adolescent psychiatry. Depending on the child’s age and needs, involvement may include: participating in evaluation sessions, joining portions of follow-up visits, receiving guidance on how to support their child at home, and collaborating on behavioral strategies and treatment decisions.
How are parents or caregivers involved in treatment?
1
Will my child need medication?
2
Not necessarily. Treatment recommendations are individualized and may include: psychotherapy, medication, or a combination of both. The decision to start medication is made thoughtfully, in collaboration with families, and with careful discussion of risks, benefits, and alternatives.
Will you communicate with my child’s school?
3
When appropriate and with proper consent, collaboration with schools can be an important part of care. This may include: speaking with teachers, counselors, or school psychologists, reviewing educational plans (e.g., IEPs or 504 plans), and providing recommendations to support academic and emotional functioning. Not all cases require school involvement.
How does confidentiality work for children and adolescents?
4
Confidentiality is an important part of treatment, even for younger patients. Dr. Wilkinson works to create a space where children and adolescents can speak openly, while also keeping parents appropriately informed.
